Grade Level: 8th Grade
Learning Objectives:
- Students will be able to model the basic concepts of El Niño and La Niña.
- Students will be able to observe and describe the changes in ocean temperature and atmospheric circulation during these events.
- Students will be able to identify potential impacts of El Niño and La Niña on weather patterns.
Materials:
- 2 clear plastic rectangular containers (e.g., shoeboxes)
- Water
- Blue and red food coloring
- 2 small fans
- Ice cubes
- Thermometer (optional)
- Map of the Pacific Ocean
Procedure:
-
Set-up:
- Fill both containers with water to the same level.
- Add a few drops of blue food coloring to both containers to represent the cool water in the eastern Pacific.
-
Normal Conditions:
- Place the fans blowing across the surface of the water in both containers, simulating the trade winds.
- Observe the water movement and temperature (if using a thermometer).
- Record your observations in your lab notebook.
-
El Niño Model:
- In one container, stop the fan. This simulates the weakening of the trade winds during El Niño.
- Observe the changes in water movement and temperature.
- Record your observations.
-
La Niña Model:
- In the other container, increase the fan speed to simulate the strengthening of the trade winds during La Niña.
- Observe the changes in water movement and temperature.
- Record your observations.
-
Analysis:
- Compare the water movement and temperature in each container.
- Discuss how the changes in wind patterns affect the distribution of warm and cold water.
- Use the map of the Pacific Ocean to visualize the real-world locations of these changes.
-
Impact on Weather:
- Discuss how changes in ocean temperature and atmospheric circulation during El Niño and La Niña can affect weather patterns in different parts of the world.
- Consider potential impacts on precipitation, temperature, and storm activity.
Observations and Data:
- Record your observations of water movement, temperature changes, and any other relevant phenomena in your lab notebook.
- Draw diagrams to illustrate the water movement and temperature patterns in each container.
- Answer the following questions:
- How did the weakening of the trade winds (El Niño model) affect the water temperature and movement?
- How did the strengthening of the trade winds (La Niña model) affect the water temperature and movement?
- How do these changes relate to the real-world phenomena of El Niño and La Niña?
- What are the limitations of this model?
